Yearbooks

Scope of Application

This directive applies to all SIS schools in all countries. It regulates the design of yearbooks and other periodically or non-periodically published printing materials which are not official publications of SIS Swiss International School. Principals are responsible for familiarising editors with the Directive “Yearbook" before they start the editing process.

Basic Principles

Yearbooks of SIS schools are not official publications of SIS Swiss International School. Their publication is therefore not the responsibility of SIS corporate managements or corporate communications. They can be edited by principals, members of the teaching staff, students or by groups of parents. With the exception of the following binding regulations, the design of the yearbooks is at the discretion of the respective editors.

The following regulations also apply in case the yearbook is published in digital form and to other periodically or non-periodically published printing materials that are not official publications of SIS Swiss International School.

Corporate Design

It is not permitted to use the corporate design of SIS Swiss International School, especially design elements such as silhouettes, shaded backgrounds and title formats.

Texts with Official Character

The following requirements only apply to editorials and articles by members of the school management, as these have an official character:

  • Editorials or articles by members of the school management must be formally in line with the current version of the SIS Style Sheets.
  • The texts are explicitly written in either the local language or English. The two languages are not to be combined within the same text.
  • If the same text is printed in both languages, it must be printed in two separate text blocks of the same design; the two text blocks are not to be characterised by different design elements (e.g. one language printed in italics or another colour).

These requirements do not apply to any other articles of the yearbook.

Company Name

The official company name SIS Swiss International School must be used.

The correct names to be used for individual locations are SIS Zürich-Wollishofen, SIS Rotkreuz-Zug, SIS Stuttgart-Fellbach, etc. Consequently, on the title page of the publication, it should say, for example:

SIS Swiss International School Zürich-Wollishofen

Within the individual texts, the names to be used are SIS Zürich-Wollishofen, SIS Rotkreuz-Zug, SIS Stuttgart-Fellbach, etc.

SIS Logo

The SIS logo may be used under the following conditions:

  • No changes are permitted whether in colour or proportion, please follow the specific guidelines here.
  • The total size of the SIS logo must not fall below 46mm (width) x 18mm (height) on A4 publications.
  • The logo square and the company name belong together.
  • The logo must be placed in the bottom left corner of the title page. In cases where the background is dark or lacks contrast to the blue logo, it is necessary to include a white rectangle behind the logo to enhance its visibility.
  • The free space around the logo equals a quarter of the logo square.

Imprint

The following note must be placed clearly legible on the first (or the last) page of the publication:

“This is not an official publication of SIS Swiss international School. The responsible editors are: [Surname(s) and Name(s)]. [Location, Publication Date]“

If the publication is a state requirement (e.g. the annual report for the Education Authority in Bavaria), the responsible editor of the publication is always the principal.

Picture Rights

The responsible editors have to make sure that pictures of students, whose parents have withdrawn the right for SIS to publish pictures of their children, will not be published in the yearbook. For this purpose, the principal may disclose the names of the respective children.

Digital Work

This directive also applies if the yearbook is published in digital form.

Covering of Costs

SIS may cover the costs of the yearbook if all of the following conditions are met cumulatively:

  • The yearbook is either compiled by students or by members of staff.
  • The responsible editor of the yearbook is either a member of the school management or a teacher.
  • Coverage of the costs by the respective school location has to be approved in advance.

If all of the abovementioned criteria are met, the yearbook must be presented to the responsible Area or Division Manager, who is to check whether it is in accordance with this directive. Each student is given one copy for free.

In all other cases, SIS does not cover any costs. A presentation to a member of management before printing is not necessary. Yearbooks can be sold. However, full responsibility lies with the editor.
